Choosing the Right Exterminator for Your Home

For some people, choosing an exterminator can be a difficult process. After all, different companies offer different services, and their performance levels can vary a great deal. In addition, some pest control services will back their work with guarantees while others will not. Here are some tips that can make your decision easier so that you can choose your contractor with confidence.

Qualifications and Licensing

You always want to deal with an exterminator that is fully licensed and qualified to handle your insect issue. Just because a business has nice vehicles and sharply dressed technicians does not guarantee that they'll be able to effectively take care of your problem. In most states, pest control companies are required to train and certify their technicians according to strict requirements. This certification requires not only a thorough knowledge of pests, but also proper methods of control.

Don't hesitate to ask for copies of licenses and certification from the companies you are considering. If you sense any hesitation whatsoever when you ask for this verification, that is an indication you should look elsewhere immediately. In addition, you'll want to make sure they carry liability insurance and find out how long they've been in business. The older the company, the more stable it likely is; established businesses don't get that way unless they've satisfied a great many customers over the years.

Association Membership

You want to consider exterminators who are members of state and national pest management associations. This shows the company has a commitment to continued learning so its personnel stay apprised of the latest technologies and techniques. You not only want to make sure each business you're considering is a member, but also that it is an active member.

There are several voluntary programs offered in the pest management industry that allow exterminators to broaden their base of knowledge. When you see that a company is participating in one of these programs, that is an excellent indication it is willing to go the extra mile to make sure you receive the most effective service possible.

Recommendations

As with any type of contractor, you should ask people you trust to get their recommendations regarding which exterminator you should use. There is a very good chance that someone you know has had pest control done recently, and will be more than happy to share their experiences with you. However, you should also look at online reviews and check the website of your local Better Business Bureau chapter to see what others think of the companies that are on your list.

Choosing a pest control company you can trust doesn't have to be difficult or time consuming. Do a little research, ask a few questions and there's a great chance you'll be satisfied with the service you receive.

Keep Your Home Free From Unwanted Visitors With Pest Control

With the changing weather often comes the arrival of some unexpected and unwanted guests into your home. Even though you have taken measures to make sure that your home is able to withstand the changes in temperature without you having to pay any additional expenses, you need to be on the lookout for some uninvited guests. When outdoor creatures make their way into your home, it is usually because they are seeking shelter and a stable living environment. This is often at your expense because once they find their way into your home, you may not know that they are living there until long after they have first made their arrival. Have your home inspected and protected by a pest control team.

Once your home has been compromised by animals and bugs, it is no longer safe for you and your family. In order to minimize the amount of damage these creatures can do to your home, you need to get in contact with a good pest control company right away. The longer you wait can mean the difference in an easy removal or a more complicated one. Keep in mind that once most creatures have found what appears to be a safe and stable environment to live, will begin to breed and infest your home even more.

You and your family shouldn't have to suffer in any kind of way because you have some uninvited guest in your home. The longer they are present, the more you are putting the health of you and your loved ones at risk. Instead of trying to save money by trying to get rid of your visitors on your own, hire a pest control company that can get the job done right away.

Pest removal is not always safe enough for an untrained person to attempt on their own. Depending on where you live and what type of creatures you have in your home, you may end up doing more harm than good. You also don't want to put your life at risk all because you felt that it would be cheaper and easier for you to be a Do-it-Yourself person. Leave the job to the experts. You'd be surprised at how cheap it is to actually have a team of professionals come out and evict your unwanted house guests on short notice. By having the professionals take care of the problem, you are minimizing the amount of damage those critters can do to your home.

In order to stay ahead of the game and keep those critters from ever making their way inside of your home, have your local pest control company come out and spray your home to prevent unauthorized entry. Allow them to take preventative measures to increase the effectiveness of your home's barriers against critter invasions. Allow them to educate you on ways you can keep unwanted critters from being attracted to your home, no matter what time of year it is.

Shield Your House With Help of Experts

Your home gifts you with a sense of comfort. It is an invaluable asset anyone can possess. Over-the-years it faces many challenges - the natural attacks are visible, but the attacks performed by silent assailants weaken it from its core. Pest and rodents are the miscreants that spread through the length and breadth of your house and become its biggest nemesis. These miscreants do not come bearing a warning and can only make their presence known with scattered dirt on the floors, hollowed wooden structures, foods that are nibbled on, etc.

The Unfriendly Boarders

The three most common nuisances a dweller has to face on a daily basis are - ants, cockroaches, and spiders. Some of their ill effects are:-

• Your health may get vandalized by the attack of these winged adversaries known as cockroaches. Being the most ancient dwellers of this planet, cockroaches are not known to cause any direct harm to your house, but it is known to be the carrier of many diseases on its spiked legs. While they enjoy roaming on your cutleries, there is a risk of getting infected by the bacteria spread through the jaywalking.

• The spiders with the artistic creation of cobwebs make their presence known. Among the wide variety of it found around us, some are known to hail a poisonous attack on you, and some are known to hail attack on the ground by burrowing.

• Ants are the silent boarders of your house. With belief in the strength of unity, they can surmount any hurdle of height or length and steal the peace of your mind by attacking the edibles. They can also cause severe damage to the walls by renting your wall space to create a web of tunnels.

It is necessary to place a call to professionals to nip the population of these arch enemies right at the bud.

The Silent Killers

Like a ninja worrier, termites are known to hail attack on your house surreptitiously. Until you witness sawdust on your floors or the hollow sound made by knocking on the wooden furniture, you are completely unaware of its presence. You may even be engulfed in the darkness caused by the power failure as termites can chew through the electric wires.

The Speedy Rodents

With their wits to outsmart you and the speed to outpace you, these are the biggest contenders your sweet abode can face. These creatures can make your life hell by spoiling your food items, leaving urine stains on the floors and making the room stench of its bad odor. With the droppings left on the food cans. They can bring about an epidemic of acute diseases as these items are loaded with harmful viruses.

With the use of eco-friendly chemicals used by many experts, you are empowered to eradicate this quick-breeding population of miscreant at one swoop without bringing any harm to your health.

Tips for Selecting a Pest Control Service

How do we select a competent pest control service?
First of all, many of us as homeowners, renters and landlords can control household pests through a combination of preventive measures, including proper sanitation and good home maintenance practices. However, some pest infestations may be extensive, or a particular pest may be difficult to control, requiring the services of a pest control company.

You should select a pest control company the way you do any other service - Look for Quality and Value. Costs and competency are important. When selecting a pest control service, cost should not be the only factor that determines the company you pick. It is important to make sure the pest control company you choose is competent. If pesticides are misused, both health and property can be damaged. Before contracting with a pest control company, consider the following:

Take Your Time/Do Your Homework
When most people discover a pest problem, they want the problem eliminated immediately. However, most problems can wait a few days so you have time to select a competent, reasonably priced company. It is wise to obtain several estimates from prospective companies. Most companies will provide free estimates.

Questions to Ask a Prospective Pest Control Firm

How many years have you been in business at your present address?
Contact organizations such as the Better Business Bureau, the States Departments of Agriculture, or the States Attorney General’s Office, or the EPA to determine if complaints have been filed against the company or its applicators for misusing pesticides.

Would you provide me with a list of references?
Contact several references to find out if they are satisfied with the service provided by the pest control company.

Will the person(s) performing the services be a certified, licensed pesticide applicator or a licensed technician? Each company must have at least one certified, licensed commercial pesticide applicator in the proper service category. Other company applicators must be certified applicators or licensed technicians under the direct supervision of an certified applicator.

Licenses may be verified by calling the various State Departments of Agriculture.

Would you provide me with a copy of your pest control license, copies of the labels for all pesticides used and the rates at which they will be applied?
Reliable applicators will show you their credentials and will be able to provide you with copies of pesticide labels that indicate how the product should be applied, including the proper application rates, and the necessary precautions.

BEWARE OF COMPANIES OR INDIVIDUALS THAT.......

  • Want to do pest control as part of a package deal, such as general home repair or tree trimming or that will give you a special price if treatment is done immediately.
  • Don’t have a listed or working telephone number.
  • Sell services door-to-door or target the elderly or infirm persons who live alone. CHECK THEIR IDENTIFICATION AND CREDENTIALS!!!
  • Arrive unexpectedly and show you insects they have found in your neighbors house as evidence of a neighborhood problem.
  • Quote a per-gallon price. Termite control can require several hundred gallons of diluted insecticide.
  • Claim to have a secret formula. All pesticide products must be registered by the U.S. EPA and the States Departments of Agriculture. Registered pesticide labels contain a list of active ingredients.
  • Try to pressure you into immediately signing a contract by suggesting your house is structurally unsound and may collapse if not treated.
  • Claim to have excess material left over from a previous job and offer a reduced price for immediate treatment.
  • Claim to be endorsed by the States Departments of Agriculture, the U.S. EPA or other government agency. Government agencies DO NOT endorse any service company or specific pesticide product.

More Points to Consider

Some pest control companies offer service contracts in which structures are routinely treated for a particular pest. Contracts may be necessary in some situations such as warehouses that receive crates often infested with cockroaches. In general, routine pesticide applications in and around your home are not good unless there is a constant infestation by a pest and non-chemical methods have failed to control the pest. Service contracts for the homeowner should include periodic inspections, but pesticides should not be applied unless the pests are actually present and cannot be controlled by other means.

Generally, it is customary for termite control work to be guaranteed from one to five years. Make sure you know what the guarantee covers and determine if there is a yearly inspection charge. In addition, find out if the pest control company is responsible for structural damage if the treatment fails to control the termite infestation. The guarantee is only as reliable as the company that offers it.

If the service person asks you to do certain things before, during or after the pesticide application, cooperate and follow instructions. For example:

  • If the service person asks you to remove personal items from the floor, empty kitchen cabinets and remove pets, make sure you have done this before they arrive.
  • Do not allow children or pets into treated areas until the pesticide spray has dried.
  • Aquariums should be removed from the treatment site or covered with heavy plastic and the air pump turned off.
  • Remove all other household pets from the treatment area.
  • If the service person suggests non-chemical methods of pest control in addition to the pesticides, be sure to follow the instructions.

Good cooperation between you and the pest control company will help eliminate pests and reduce pesticide use.

Pesticides are inherently toxic and may cause health problems and/or damage to the environment if used in a manner inconsistent with the label directions. Certain pesticides may pose greater risks than others. To determine the pesticide that best fits your needs, contact your local University Extension Service.

Where To Find Bed Bugs In Your Home

"Good night. Sleep tight. Don't let the bed bugs bite!" That was how many of us were tucked into bed. Unfortunately, for many, this has become a reality.

Bed bugs have been infesting homes and feeding on humans for centuries. In the early 1900's families used extreme measures to control these pests. Stories from our parents and/or grandparents of using kerosene to "wash" the springs and mattresses to kill them were common. These remedies were replaced when chemical solutions became more available to the public. In the late 1980's the reports of infestations began to rise in developed countries throughout the world. Resistance to chemicals and ease of travel seem to be the primary factors, however, the change in available chemicals resulting from the environmental movement may also be a factor. Some schools of thought are that bed bugs were accidentally controlled by application of these materials that are no longer in production and banned by the EPA.

Bed bugs can sometimes be difficult to detect. What may present as large, red bumps on some and chicken pox looking pustules on others, might not affect some people at all. Reactions to bites may take time to appear until multiple bites have occurred. Tell-tale signs of blood sucking critters can also include small blood stains on bedding as well as actual sightings of them. Most people want to know how they got the problem in the first place. Common questions to ask are: Have you traveled out of the country? Have you slept in a hotel? Have you bought or acquired used furniture? Have you had guests in your home who may have introduced them? Do you have a student living away from home in a dorm or apartment with roommates? Are you an in home caregiver? Do you work or volunteer at a shelter? Infestations are not confined to the indigent, unkempt of society. They cross all social and economic lines. It is important to identify and act appropriately to any suspected infestations.

Bed bugs live not only in mattresses and box springs, but will infest bed frames, wooden furniture, (I.e. night stands, chest of drawers, dressers) behind baseboards, door and window frames, behind pictures on walls, in draperies, luggage, etc. In recent detailed studies of their behavior at the University of Kentucky, bed bugs were noted to infest an average perimeter from the bed as far as 16' away. In some cases, bed bugs were noted up 30' away in adjacent rooms. It is common to find infestations on beds and other upholstered furniture throughout a dwelling. Occasional sightings of individual bugs on ceilings have been reported.

Control and elimination is difficult and best left to the professionals.

Top Seven Pest Control Tips

That line of ants can be bothersome especially when you have a party at home, or guests are about to arrive at your place. Mosquitoes, rodents, mice, spiders, flies, and bugs are another category of menace that can spoil your mood and the surroundings.

Keeping the pest away is the only solution to the concerned problem. The article highlights a few effective pest control practices to keep these problem creatures at bay.

Seven Effective Pest Control Tips

  • Block all their passages to your home - The simplest way is to restrict their entry to your home by covering all the open sources. With open sources, I mean all the holes and gaps. Get them repaired as soon as possible for achieving a peaceful ambience.
  • Clear all the standing water - Is there any standing water around your surroundings? If your answer is yes, then let me inform you that you are giving an open invitation to the pest in your place. Keep a regular check on your property to find out if there is some water standing in your vicinity. Clear it soon for ensuring a cleaner and bug-free environment.
  • The squeaky-clean kitchen is a possible solution - I advise you to get your kitchen rid of all the littered food as ants like to flock to the junk around. Wipe each corner of the kitchen, sweep floors, slabs, and countertops for the best results.
  • Inspection of outdoor furniture and yards - Regular examination of the yards and outdoor furniture is essential to find out if there are spider webs, snakes, and egg sacks. If you can see these developments in the outdoor surroundings, get them cleared quickly.
  • Consume fruits and veggies as soon as possible - We often store fruits and vegetables in a basket and forget to have them. In such a case, fruits and veggies get overly ripe and become a centre of attraction for the ants. The strong smell produced by such eatables works as a magnetic element to them and they get flocked to the same.
  • Make use of anti-allergens to clean the floor - Make use of anti-allergens like phenyl to wash the floor. It helps to keep the pest away.
  • Hire professional pest control services - If you feel that in spite of adopting all the precautionary measures, things do not seem to be working on a right direction, hiring professionals is the only choice left then. They are the only people who will come to your rescue during an emergency.

Just keeping a few pest control tips in mind can contribute to a healthy environment for you and your family members this summer. Cheers and Happy summers!

Pest Control: The What, Why, and How of Finding Reputable Services in Your Area

Insects and wild animals contribute to the spread of disease-causing bacteria that can be harmful to the health of your family. Pesky critters can also cause serious, expensive structural damage to your home. Protect your family and your home by employing a reliable pest control service and scheduling regular maintenance inspections.

Benefits of Inspections

Pest control experts provide a range of services. If your home hasn't had an inspection in a while or if you need extermination services for a specific nuisance, you'll need to call a provider for a primary inspection and request an initial estimate. Many service providers will do their primary inspection for free. After the primary inspection, your exterminator will work with you to rid your home of natural intruders. Once your home is clean, continue to have regular maintenance inspections to keep it that way. Regular building inspections can also protect your home from other structural threats such as dry rot, which occurs as a result of a fungus.

Types of Pests

Exterminators can rid your home of various nuisances, including cockroaches, termites, bees, ants, fleas, wasps, flies, and ticks. Many also provide wildlife management services for the removal of dangerous wild animals. In addition, inspections can also protect your family pets by deterring harmful fleas and ticks. Rodents such as mice, rats, and squirrels can nest in your walls, and you need an exterminator's trained eye to determine the best way to protect your home.

Signs You Need a Specialist

Bugs and animals leave evidence that is easy to spot if you know what to look for, so if you notice any of the following in your home, contact a pest control specialist as soon as possible:

- Droppings or entry points
- Dead insects or insect wings
- Live insects or insect nests
- Gnaw marks or holes in wood
- Dried blood spots on bedding from bed bugs

Finding the Right Company

To find an exterminator, ask your peers for recommendations and do some online research. Online search engines can be helpful when searching for providers and comparing prices. Select an exterminator with an established reputation and good reviews, and remember these important factors when selecting a pest control company:

- Make sure the company you select is a member of a national, state, or local pest management association.
- Before entering a contract, understand the seriousness of any problem infestations. Costs can increase once an exterminator gets into the removal process and uncovers the extent of the problem.
- If your provider offers a guarantee, make sure you understand the terms and hold up your end of the agreement. Infestations can be tricky to get rid of, so make sure you're covered.

Use these tips to aid in finding the right exterminator. If you believe you have an infestation, begin contacting and comparing providers today.

What Can an Exterminator Do for You?

An exterminator is a professional to call when you are dealing with pests of any sort. The fact is any type of infestation can go from being a nuisance to being a long-term problem if you do not take care of it right away. The good news is that there are plenty of options available to help you with this. You should not put off getting the help you need to bring the infestation back under control, or even to get rid of it altogether. Do you think you need a professional? If you think you can just handle the problem yourself, think again. It may be more of a problem than you realize.

Find the Source

One of the most important things that an exterminator will do is to find the source of the problem. If you have ants in your home, they may be coming from the neighbor's yard. They could be coming from the woodpile outside your home. Once the source is located, the next step can begin. That is to get rid of the pests at this location so that you stop the infestation from occurring.

Pinpoint Damage

Did you know that many types of pests do more than just annoy you? Some of them carry diseases and can be deadly to come in contact with. Others actually do damage to your home. If you are like many people, you don't crawl around in your attic often and you may not realize that the mice have destroyed the wiring or the raccoons have gotten into the insulation. A professional can spot all of the potential problems so you can take care of them properly. Some situations, such as termites eating away at the wood structure of your home, can be extremely serious if left untreated.

Treat the Problem Safely

There are both eco-friendly and chemically based products on the market for dealing with pests. It is up to you and your exterminator to determine the best possible solution for getting rid of the problem. One thing is for certain, though: with the aid of these professionals, you can cut down on the risk of your children or pets getting sick because of the chemicals you are using. They will also handle the problem safely, so that pests are kept away from you and your family.

No matter how large or small the infestation is, it is a good idea to call a professional to manage it. An exterminator can help you to get rid of the problem and find a long-term solution, and ultimately can give you your house back.

Bedbugs Have Favorite Colors, Study Finds

ISTOCK

When they aren’t chewing on you, bedbugs spend most of their time hiding in tiny cracks and crevasses. However, not all hiding places are equal for bedbugs, new research finds. They may have a preference for hiding under certain colors, according to a new study in the Journal of Medical Entomology.

Scientists at the University of Florida set up Petri dishes with paper tents in various colors available for the bed bugs to hide under, then watched to see if they preferred specific colors. The Petri dishes either contained two or seven choices of colored paper tents for the bugs to choose from.

Each bedbug had 10 minutes alone in their Petri dish to choose a hiding place before the scientists recorded their preference. Some of the bedbugs in the study had been recently fed, while others had been starved of blood for a week. The trial was repeated 40 different times with bedbugs in various life stages, both male and female.

The bedbugs’ preferences changed depending on their sex and life stage, but in general, yellow and green colors seemed to repel them, while darker colors like red and black were more appealing hiding spots. Female bedbugs preferred purple hues, while males preferred red and black more. The bugs laid more eggs under blue, red, and black paper. So while buying bedsheets, couches, and luggage, just remember that bedbugs have the fashion preferences of Avril Lavigne circa 2003.

But yellow luggage will only do so much to deter bedbugs, obviously. If you’re worried about the blood suckers, check out our tips for avoiding them while traveling. Or just never leave the house.

Five Simple Tips For Choosing The Right Pest Control Company

Pests such as bees, wasps, ants, flies, rats, termites, roaches, and rodents such as rats, moles and mice are a problem for businesses and residences worldwide. The pests destroy the environment and cause health problems. If such pests trouble you, you should consult pest control professionals. Finding a professional is not an issue, but finding the right one is the doubting task. While some may charge expensively, others may offer substandard services. Avoid dialing a call to any company you found on the internet, newspaper or television, instead follow this simple tips to get the right one.

Choose an insured company

The company that is eliminating pest in your home or business should be insured. While working with such company, you rest assured that in case of damage, you will be fully compensated. The experts should also belong to a professional association. Such experts offer quality work.

The exterminators should be experienced

The second thing you should consider is the experience. For how long have the company been operational? How many successful cases have they handled? Look for a company that has both experience and a good reputation. Such companies have the equipment, knowledge, and skill to handle any challenge. They know the right methods that will eliminate given type of pests, and they are knowledgeable about the pesticides they use. They will offer you best advice based on their experience.

The company should consider the safety of the environment

Third, the right company gives safety of the environment first propriety. Pesticides contain harmful chemicals. If they are used in the wrong way, they end up harming the environment. This may cause health problems to people and animals in the surrounding. The company you hire should consider the safety of the environment while exterminating the pests by using methods that will not harm the environment.

Read the company reviews

Again, you should always read the reviews on the site before hiring. Clients come back to give feedback about the services they got when the hired the company. They may give the comments on the site or any other place on the internet. Reviews do not lie.

The company's reputation

Finally, check the reputation of the company before hiring. Most companies dealing with pest control advertise their services on the internet and the mainstream media. This opens opportunities for fraudsters. Before you settle for a given company, research it well and evaluate its reputation.

Finding the right pest control company should not be a challenging task. It is important to hire a company that will do the job for the first time than a company that will force you to hire another company to do the same job.

These services also offer regular maintenance through house visits to root out your bugs for good. Let's view some common infestations these exterminators can deftly handle.

Cockroaches

These are quite possibly the most repulsive of all the vermin. They are highly adaptive creatures, which make them very hard to exterminate. On top of this, they reproduce at a rapid rate and are nocturnal, so you could have a serious roach infestation and not even know about it. They can survive without eating food for over a month and will eat glue, shoe linings, and other dead insects. If you have children, these vile creatures can also cause asthma problems in the event of a very serious infestation. Get the exterminators out to your house and rid yourself of roaches!

Bed Bugs

These tiny little bugs will crawl into your bed sheets and couches, and they bite hard enough to draw blood. Despite the fact that they ingest our blood, these insects are not known to pass diseases on to humans. If they do find their way into your home, you will need to have your whole house exterminated; simply throwing away an affected mattress or couch is not sufficient. Get professional pest control to your residence to effectively rid your house of these vermin. Bed bugs can survive for up to one year without feeding, and once they do feed, the females will lay around 200 eggs almost immediately. So be warned: where there is one, there are many.

Termites

These pesky insects can cause some serious structural damage to your residence. They won't be much of a nuisance to you, and you probably won't even be able to see them either, since most termites that affect residences in the United States are subterranean dwellers. These creatures tunnel up from the ground looking for dead or rotting wood. If they cannot find these sources of food, they are happy to snack on your home. Their infestations can number in the millions, and termites are particularly dangerous because you may not even see them at all. If you notice small holes near your trees or in your basement, you should immediately contact your pest control professionals before you sustain serious structural damage to your home.

These are but a few of the vermin that quality pest control services will be able to exterminate. Get in touch with your local exterminator to find out how they can help you and protect your home.

Winter Pest Control Tips

As the temperature drops during fall and winter months, rodent control becomes an important concern. Just as humans and pets seek shelter inside cozy warm homes, so do unwelcome visitors including mice, rats and other animals. Rodents can represent a major health risk to you and your children as they can carry and transmit many different diseases. In order to avoid having these dirty, diseased pests in your home, this article will provide a three-step approach to blocking entry to your home, making your house less appealing to pests by removing food sources, and finally, in the event you still have a pest problem, ridding your home of the rodents.

Mice and other small rodents can squeeze through very small cracks and holes, so be sure to seal any visible openings or cracks along the exterior or your house. Carefully look near windows and doors - as foundation settling can be significant, and gaps will often appear along these areas. Be sure to also look for and seal any openings inside your home: look around your baseboards, behind kitchen cabinets and appliances, closets and other areas rodents may gain entry.

Just as rodents are looking to stay warm during winter months, they're also looking for food! Any available food supply makes an attractive target for rodents and should be cleaned up to cut down on possible infestation. If you store food in kitchen cabinets or a pantry, be sure to keep it in sturdy containers. Any thin or loose-fitting food bag is no match for a hungry animal. The same goes for pet food and garbage. Keep pet food in a heavy plastic or metal container that can seal out unwanted critters and keep your garbage area clean. Promptly remove especially messy trash and any food waste and consider using a garbage container with a lid.

Taking precautionary steps to eliminate sources of entry and sources of food will go a long way toward keeping pests outside your home this winter. But what happens if those nasty pests still find their way inside? The next step is pest removal or eradication.

Before dealing with a bug or rodent infestation, ask yourself if you are willing to tackle the problem on your own. Depending on the nature of the problem, some rodents, especially larger ones, should be handled by professionals. These critters carry a risk of disease and other health hazards. It's not advisable to mess with them if you aren't sure what you're doing. However, if you're up to the challenge, the first step in taking care of rodents is identifying what type of pest you have.

Identifying rodents can be easily done if you actually witness them, but if they're aren't visible you can tell by signs left such as gnaw marks, droppings, body trail marks (body marks left by animals running alongside wood), odor, etc. Once you know what uninvited guests you have, you can take the appropriate measures to get rid of them.

Handling a rodent infestation usually means using traps and bait, repellents, poison and more. Types of traps typically include live traps, glue traps, electric traps and snap traps. Plan ahead to determine the most appropriate trap for your situation. For example, live traps require you to remove the trapped animal, otherwise the rodent will suffer a painful death. Poison traps may result in a poisoned rodent dying in an out of the way place you can't get to, resulting in foul odor and disease from the decaying carcass. Finally, the use of poison represents a major health risk for your family and pets.

Be sure to wear gloves, protective clothing and a mask when discarding trapped or dead animals to avoid contact with parasites, the risk of being bitten and other dangers. If you aren't willing or able to deal with the necessary steps to physically block pests from entering your home including removing food sources, or to properly identify and eradicate pests (including with handling dead animals), consider contacting a professional pest control company.

Why You Should Hire a Pest Control Service

Many people try to fight bugs using store-bought chemicals, only to lose the battle in the long run. If you're having problems with insects, a pest control service can get rid of the issue once and for all. These are just a few of the reasons why you should go with a professional rather than try and handle an infestation on your own.

Costs

A pest control service may cost you hundreds of dollars each year, but that amount is only a fraction of what you'll pay if carpenter ant colonies or termites are allowed to do damage to your home. You could be looking at several thousands of dollars in repairs and structural problems that possibly cannot be fixed. A professional will conduct regular inspections of your property and take care of any problems before serious issues can occur.

Customized Plans

Whether you are treating an older home or trying to protect a new one, a pest control service can provide you with a plan that will meet your exact needs. A professional will take several factors into consideration when recommending the plan that is best for you, including the size of your home, the level of infestation that has occurred, and what methods will best bring about long-term prevention.

Safety

Technicians undergo extensive training in how their products work and how to safely place them inside and outside of a home. Several companies have turned to environmentally friendly sprays that are safe for humans and pets. This is in stark contrast to the dangerous chemicals you can find at your local store.

In addition, professionals also know how to safely attack potentially dangerous areas such as beehives and wasps' nests. A novice could easily disturb a hive, for instance, and cause a swarm that could result in serious injuries. If you have an infestation of mice and don't know how to properly eliminate it, you could unknowingly allow them to scatter and spread potentially severe diseases.

Convenience

It can be a hassle to try and find places where bugs are gathering and eliminate them. If you don't want to spend your entire day trying to play the role of an exterminator, let a professional handle it. Most pest control service companies will work around your schedule, allowing you to focus on things you'll actually enjoy doing. Professionals will also continue to monitor your property and re-treat any problem areas should an infestation unexpectedly return.

When you call a pest control company, you can rest easy knowing that you and your family will be protected from infestations for months at a time. You won't have to waste money on harmful chemicals, and you'll get quality, guaranteed service that will rid your home of unwanted visitors.

5 Reasons to Hire a Pest Control Company

Highly rated exterminators can proactively treat the exterior of your home to prevent pests from becoming a problem indoors or out. (Photo courtesy of member Margaret G. of Cheshire, Connecticut)

Anyone who's ever seen an ant scurry across their kitchen floor or watched a spider dangle from their living room ceiling knows that cohabitation with pests is a problem.

Pest infestations can damage your property, create an uncomfortable atmosphere for your family and, in some cases, contaminate your home.

The quickest and most effective method of eliminating unwanted pests? It's not at the hardware store. For lasting, safe extermination you should hire a professional pest control service to treat your home for the unwanted insects, spiders or animals.

Your health

Beyond being creepy, pests can carry harmful diseases and hazardous bacteria that can expose your family members to illness. For instance, cockroaches carry E coli and salmonella on their bodies and can also cause or intensify health problems related to allergies and asthma.

Tick bites can cause Lyme disease, which is a dangerous condition often associated with symptoms such as rashes, severe fatigue and extreme illness.

Ants can contaminate your food, and bees or wasps can cause injuries and trigger dangerous allergic reactions.

Fortunately, even before calling an exterminator, there are some things you can do to make your home unappealing to bugs.

Identify, eliminate pests

Most pest control companies can eliminate many different types of pests, including spiders, rodents and all sorts of insects — ants, bees, cockroaches, fleas, termites and wasps.

Different types of baits and chemicals are required to extract and eliminate different types of pests. A licensed pest control technician will know the safe and proper dosages of these chemicals to apply and when and where to apply them.

A significant benefit of hiring a pest control service is that the professionals have the training and experience to identify the types of pests infiltrating your property and determine how best to eliminate them. The companies can eradicate certain pests by using poisoned bait, bait that leads into a trap or various chemicals. Some pest control companies specialize in organic or green pest control.

Live bee-trapping and relocation is becoming more common as more people recognize the buzzing insects' role in food production and pollination.

Finding the source

Professionals can maximize the effect of a pest control treatment by also locating the source of the infestation.

If you eliminate the pests but don't find the source attracting them to your home, more infestations are likely. Pest control companies can determine the cause of your problem, find the specific source and eliminate it to prevent future infestations.

Sources might include egg batches, garbage, nests, plants, soil, pet food or particular areas in your walls.

Time

A professional pest control company can provide quicker and more effective results than if you tried to fix the infestation yourself. Because of their experience and chemicals that may not be readily available to consumers, they can quickly implement extermination plans and efficiently eliminate all pests in a relatively short amount of time.

Most companies can complete pest control treatment services within one to six hours, while larger problems that require fumigation can take up to a week.

Avoiding damage

The cost to hire a pest control company may even save you money over time.

Many pests and rodents can damage your home — destroying carpets, clothes, foundations, floors, furniture, rugs or walls. This can eventually force you to repair the damage or pay to have it fixed.

Paying a licensed professional to eradicate the pest infiltration quickly and effectively can protect your property.

Treatment costs

The exact price of pest control treatment depends on the type of pest, the size of your property, the severity of the problem and the professional you hire.

Angie's List members reported spending an average of $214 on exterior pest control treatments and $145 on interior treatments in 2013. The average price for most pest control services ranges from about $100 to $250. However, larger termite problems that require fumigation can be more expensive, averaging from $1,000 to $3,000.

You can also contract with exterminators to proactively treat your property at periodic intervals during the year to ensure your home remains pest-free all year long. The average price for periodic treatment typically ranges from $30 to $70 per month or per quarter.

Stop the Bugs in Their Tracks! It's Time for Pest Control

Insect invaders are never welcome in your home. Put a stop their advancements with pest control services. These buggy creatures can cause a number of structural, health, and general hygienic problems in your residence. Don't expose your family to these vile creatures any longer. Get the professionals out to your home before these insects can cause you and your family some real trouble. Let's take a look at a few of the common insect infestations that homeowners should be aware of. If you notice any of the things below, do not hesitate to call pest control to exterminate these insects where they stand.

Fleas

Summertime brings pleasant, warm weather, but it's also the perfect time for a sharp increase in flea populations. While the majority of health problems that these lecherous insects cause will be to your pets, they can be quite an annoyance to your daily life, causing you itchy skin and red bumps. When you call out an exterminator to deal with your flea problem, they will ask you a number of questions to determine how bad your infestation is. You will also need to do a few things before they start the extermination process:

- Vacuum the entirety of your home and then place the used vacuum bags in the garbage.
- Pick up all loose books, toys, and other clutter off the floor.
- Wipe down or mop all tiled surfaces that cannot be vacuumed.
- Get your pets treated for fleas.
- Provide an empty home for at least four hours so the chemicals can do their job.

Post-extermination, you should vacuum as often as possible and keep a sharp eye on your pets to ensure that the infestation does not return.

Termites

These wood-eating insects are found in every single state except for Alaska. Almost all of these insects operate on the subterranean level so it will be hard for you to see them. If these bugs cannot find wood to eat in their natural surroundings, they will turn their attention on your home. Any wood in your home that makes contact with the soil allows termites easy access to your residence. Do not keep firewood right by your home, as this attracts termites. Getting regular pest control inspections for termites could save you thousands upon thousands of dollars in structural repairs. If you notice a number of discarded wings around your windowsills or small tunnels in your home's corners and other wooden places, call your exterminator as soon as possible.

Flies

There are over 240,000 documented species of these flying nuisances in existence. Over one-third of these types can be found in the United States. These bugs are confirmed disease carriers, and they are quite adept at passing bacteria over to human beings. They breed anywhere that there is decaying matter, which allows them to attain and distribute numerous viruses and bacteria. These insects can go from egg to full blown fly in under seven days, so if you have a fly problem, it is best to get pest control out to your residence as quickly as possible to quell this growth.

Be vigilant in your home! Do not allow your residence to run rampant with insects.

5 Pest Control Myths

If you have recently become aware of a potential pest control problem in your home or business, you do not have time to waste with repellents or trap ideas that don't work! Taking quick action to deal with the problem and guarding your home or business against further invasion is essential in preventing a larger infestation.

Unfortunately, there are many old wives tales and ineffective DIY methods spread across the internet and social media. To help put some of these misconceptions to rest, here are top five pest control myths that tend to mislead consumers.

MYTH: A cleanly kept home will not have mice or bugs

Although keeping an immaculate home is an important way to reduce the risk of vermin challenges, it does not guarantee it. Bed bugs, for example, can be found everywhere from upscale homes to low-end hotels. The reason for this is that they are not drawn to dirt, clutter, or garbage - they are attracted to blood. Where ever people are living and sleeping, so too might bedbugs!

Therefore, whether your place is amazingly clean or overflowing with clutter makes no difference to a bed bug. Bed bugs can be brought home from hotels, nursing homes, libraries, movie theatres and more. You might be shocked and surprised by the top 10 bedbug infestation spots.

The only reason a dirty household would be more susceptible to a bed bug infestation would be due to clutter hiding early warning signs of a problem.

Mice are another undesirable that can be found in clean homes but they will need a food source before they will attempt to make your home theirs. So with this one, it does help to keep the home free of clutter and to eliminate all possible food sources.

MYTH: Professional control treatments are dangerous

The use of harsh chemicals is a thing of the past for responsible companies. Where stronger treatments are needed, the health and safety of the residents can be adequately planned to ensure there is no unnecessary risk. The majority of treatment options today, however, are completely safe for you, your family, and the environment.

Some companies are even offering green options for pest control that are less toxic to humans and, as an added benefit, are often less costly than traditional options that include pesticides. The focus of these types of treatments is on preventing rodents and insects from getting into your house in the first place, rather than eliminating them once they are already present. For example, a door sweep, which covers up the hole between the bottom of your door and the floor, can be added to a home to block off the tiny space that a rodent can easily utilize to enter a home.

MYTH: bedbugs are not visible to the naked eye

In fact, adult bed bugs are easily seen with the naked eye. The challenge is that they are nocturnal and they are good at staying hidden during the day.

MYTH: Ultrasonic repellents as deterrents

Ultrasonic devices are designed to use ultra-high frequency sound waves to drive vermin away. It seems like a great idea, but the problem is that manufacturers of these products have yet to support their claims with scientific evidence.

MYTH: Consult a professional expert only when there is a serious problem

Thinking that a problem will clear up on its own is a mistake. By the time you notice the first signs of pests, your home or business could already be infested. Don't wait until you have a serious problem before you take action.

If you suspect even the slightest pest control problem, contact a professional to get advice immediately.

Pest Control Specialists Can Prevent Skin Irritation, Embarrassment, and Sleepless Nights

Pest control professionals are widely known for tackling the issue of unwanted insects. Although many of the bugs that enter into people's homes and businesses are harmless, they are still understandably unwelcome. There are some people, however, who choose to handle the situation on their own with the use of different types of insect spray and bug repellants. Unfortunately, some of these people find themselves having to pull out their spray consistently for persistent pests. Not only can professionals handle this issue, but there are also several other reasons why reaching out for specialists' help is in your best interest.

Pesticide Usage

Along with conventional bug spray, many people are now turning to do-it-yourself concoctions and choosing to take matters into their own hands. Pesticides can work wonders when used correctly. On the contrary, when misused these toxins can cause all sorts of problems, such as skin, eye, and throat irritation. It's important for people to allow pest control professionals to come in and properly apply the mixture. Not only do they know exactly where to spray, they also know just the right amount to use.

Itchiness and Irritation

Because specialists have a higher success rate when dealing with unwanted insects, homeowners and business owners usually don't have to worry about recurring issues, especially if ordering scheduled treatments. On the other hand, amateur work can leave people vulnerable to constant insect invasions, as well as bug bites. Even if the bites don't pose a health threat, they can still be irritating to people's skin and nerves. For instance, having to wake up throughout the night with itchy skin can not only be annoying, but it can cause people to lose sleep.

Prevent Embarrassment

The bites and irritation that come from unwanted pests can be enough to make anyone cringe. However, the embarrassment of insect sightings can be just as troublesome. Many people associate bugs in a home or business with uncleanliness. A home can be beautifully decorated, but as soon as roaches or spiders appear, it's as if nothing else matters. Of course, people can have insect issues due to things outside of their control. Unfortunately, some people aren't able to look past the bugs. And no matter what the homeowner may say, their explanation can sometimes fall on deaf ears.

Save Money

Some people believe they are saving money by choosing to take matters into their own hands. However, because of the amount of trial and error usually involved, they end up spending more than they budgeted. This is why it's so important for people to rely on pest control specialists to help fix their insect issues. Not only can they help save people money, but they can also protect them from the effects of harmful toxins, unnecessary embarrassment, and sleepless nights.

How Important Is Pest Control?

Pest control management is a system seeking to eliminate insects and bugs from the premises that are inhabited by human beings. It has always been a necessity for all homes and human health. This is of utmost necessity for home owners to maintain the proper health and environment around us. There are a lot of reasons why it is important and why one should consider taking it seriously:

Damage prevention to homes and structures
Around five billion dollars are spent every year all over the world in respect to damages caused by bug and termite infection. The bugs can damage the wooden contents of the home, burrowing into the woods, eating up all the landings, beams and walls in your homes. They damage the structure making it a lot vulnerable to chances of collapse, thus leaving all the household members at a great risk. Older and delicate homes that have not been treated are at greater risks. Constant vigilance and assistance, for proper implementation is recommended.

Prevention of diseases
Disease prevention can be another huge benefit of implementing proper pest control measures. Allergies, rashes, respiratory problems as well as asthma can be well prevented with the proper implementation of these measures. Allergens in pests are also known to result in allergies in people.
