Tiny fans help bugs dance on the water’s surface

Ripple bugs are aquatic insects that can dart across flowing streams with mesmerizing speed and agility. Using high-speed cameras, UC Berkeley biologist Víctor Ortega Jiménez studies the fan structures that these bugs use to dance on water. The fans’ ability to passively expand when submerged and contract when removed from the water inspired collaborators at Ajou University to design a similar water striding robot.
